Chemical bulk freight quote checklist

A short, practical list of what to have in front of you before requesting a bulk chemical freight quote. You can inquire with gaps — this simply makes the first reply more useful.

Identify the product

Start with the product name as your own team refers to it, and note whether a current safety data sheet exists. State plainly whether the product is regulated as a hazardous material, or that you are unsure — unsure is a normal and useful answer.

Include any prior-product or cleaning restriction your quality process applies. Product classification and handling determinations stay with your own qualified reviewers; a transportation coordinator works from what you provide.

Define the route

Give the origin and destination as city, state or province, postal code and country. Add the loading method at origin and the unloading method at destination, since those drive both equipment and time on site.

  • Origin and destination locations
  • Loading method at origin
  • Unloading method at destination
  • Facility hours and appointment rules at each end
  • Any site access or carrier approval requirement

State the amount and units

Quantity per load with the units you work in — pounds, gallons, litres or kilograms. If load size varies, give the usual figure and the range.

Set out dates and frequency

Give a requested pickup date or say that timing is flexible, and add the delivery window if one applies. Say whether this is a single load or a repeating movement, and for repeating freight give the expected loads per week or month and any seasonal pattern.

List the equipment and facility requirements you supply

Tank lining, gasket material, hose requirements and pump type are the shipper's requirements, not assumptions for a coordinator to make. Write them down as your approvals state them, together with anything your receiving site expects from a carrier.

Note what is still outstanding

List the questions you have not answered yet and the information you are waiting on internally. Naming the gaps up front is more useful than leaving a field blank, and it lets the review work around them.
